Why We Give

A tithe—which means “tenth”—is defined as the first 10% of a person’s income before taxes or anything else comes out. The word tithing originated with Abraham, who was the first to give a tithe. Tithing was a principle before it was a law and that principle hasn't ended. Although Abraham was the first to give the tithe, giving our best gifts to God is first documented in the story of Cain and Abel. God praised Abel for giving his best gift, while rebuking Cain for not giving with a pure heart. There are various factors that may motivate a person to give. We will address trust and the storehouse, which are only a few of the components of giving.

God first trusted His creation with what was His. He created everything and placed mankind as the steward. Then He trusted man to set aside 10% of what He had given them as a "sacred portion," which we are to tithe back to Him. There is still much to do in this world and in the hands of responsible Church leaders, the tithe is of great value in feeding the sheep and winning the lost. God is blessed when we choose to not neglect His house for the sake of our own needs. It proves that we are in agreement with His priorities and purposes.

The "storehouse" is where the tithes are brought. In the Old Testament the tithes were brought into the storehouse and given to the priests to be used in the temple. Today's storehouse is the local church. Bringing your tithe into the storehouse is one way to honor God and further His kingdom by meeting the needs of our Church leaders, providing for our ministry space, and partnering with us in spreading the Gospel of Peace to our community.

Generous Giving (Offerings)

What is an offering or a generous gift? Offerings are above and beyond the tithe and do not replace it. Offerings can be directed to specific ministries within NCC or to assist in other matters such as maintenance, capital expenditures, the Benevolence Fund, etc. When you give an offering, it is usually because you have a shared burden for a particular need as mentioned above. As you mature in your faith and grow in fiscal responsibility, you may discover more and more joy in giving generously to the kingdom of God through offerings that are over and above your tithe.

We agree with the Apostle Paul who tells us in 2 Corinthians that each person must decide in their heart how much to give and that no one should give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. To read this portion of scripture on the joy of generous giving, see 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9.

If you would like to schedule your offerings to go to a particular ministry in the form of a pledge, you may do so. A pledge is simply an amount of money that you plan to donate towards a specific fund. You can initiate this when set-up your account or at any other time by revisiting the scheduled giving section and selecting a specific ministry. For a full list of funds, refer to the list in Schedule Your Giving below.
